World Environment Day (5 June) falls within the same month as Volunteers Week (1 -7 June). This is a wonderful opportunity to combine the two and give a little of your time to helping to make a difference to the environment.
From a fantastic fir to a splendid spruce, the Christmas tree is a well -loved and well-decorated feature of most of our Christmases. But did you know that our Christmas trees actually are actually a modern invention and an exotic, European import?
Forestry minister David Rutley joined the Woodland Trust, Community Forest Trust, government Tree Champion Sir William Worsley and students from St Andrew’s CE Primary School in Radcliffe, Bury where they began the planting of 200 saplings as part of the government’s £5.7m investment.
Since 1990, our communities have come together in celebration of our leafy friends on Tree Dressing Day which takes place the first weekend of December. It is all about remembering and appreciating what our trees do for us. We can then make a fuss of our favourite trees by trimming them with colourful decorations.
