Treescapes: Voices for the future

Trafford kids share their dreams and demands for the future of our environment.

City of Trees has been working with the Treescapes: Voices for the Future project to engage children in designing, creating and caring for treescapes, including natural woodlands and urban parks across Greater Manchester.

As part of the Treescapes project, City of Trees has worked closely with the children of Seymour Primary School in Old Trafford to help create their very own tree manifesto. The children first engaged in the project two years ago at a planting event and their enthusiasm has only grown. This is demonstrated in the clear demands of their manifesto, ‘Plant more trees, now! Let us have a future’.

With the help of Clear Channel, select images from the manifesto have been displayed to the public around Greater Manchester and Merseyside. A big thank you to Clear Channel for providing free advertising space across a range of sites, through their Platform for Good scheme.

Our Call to Action

Inspired by the children’s demands for greener, cleaner, fairer earth but unsure where to start? Here are some ideas to kick start your efforts:

  • Volunteer and become a Citizen Forester– join a community tree planting day across Greater Manchester. Our tree planting season runs from October to April, and you will find all events on our website.
  • Plant trees in your community – as a community forest, we have funding available to plant and maintain trees across Greater Manchester. We work with individuals and groups from all areas on both public and private land. So if you have land, get in touch.
  • Share our mission – Start a conversation around the benefits of our trees and woodlands for local people through sharing our content and signing up to our newsletter.
  • Get your school involved – City of Trees provides free trees to local schools and organises educational planting days with pupils. All we need is space to plant and enthusiastic kids, find out more here.

Developed in partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University and Mersey Forest, the tree manifesto was brought to life with illustrations curated by Maisy Summer.

This work was kindly supported by the Natural Environment Research Council.

The ‘Voices of the Future’ project aimed to work with diverse children and young people to co-develop more hopeful, equitable, resilient treescapes of the future. For more information about this fantastic project, please visit Manchester Metropolitan University Website.
