Spades and buckets for tree planting

Take action as a landowner

Plant trees on your land today

City of Trees has a wealth of knowledge and experience and is a trusted partner to plant millions of trees – all to take action on the climate and biodiversity emergency in Greater Manchester. As the community forest for Greater Manchester, we work across all ten boroughs as well as delivering projects on the fringes of the city region. We’re also interested to hear from landowners wanting to explore woodland management opportunities on their site.

Why we plant trees

We have funding secured through the Government’s Nature for Climate Fund to support more tree planting for the Greater Manchester area, on including farmland in the region.

Get in touch

Speak to one of our experienced team to discuss funded woodland creation and tree planting opportunities on your land.

What is our offer?

We plant trees in both rural and urban areas, creating wildlife corridors between cities and towns, greening school grounds as well as helping to combat flooding and capture carbon by planting trees in upland areas.

Our main focus is to create more wooded areas. Our expert team will work with you to support the identification of potential woodland creation areas and opportunities to plant standard (larger) trees, community orchards and hedges – our ethos being ‘the right tree in the right place’.

We will discuss our recommendations with you as well as doing various checks on the land to ensure its suitability for trees.

Who do we work with?

We work with individuals and groups from all areas and sectors – public or private – from schools, local authorities, housing associations, developers and farmers, to sports ground and hospital sites. Funding is available now to support landowners plant trees on their land. The funding will pay for the cost of supplying and planting the trees and associated materials. Below are just a few examples of the types of landowners we have planted with.

Private landowners

We work with a range of private landowners from private estates, businesses or third sector organisations. In 2023 over 17,242 trees were planted over 49 compartments at Greenbooth Reservoir (near Rochdale) as part of a scheme led by City of Trees and landowner partners, United Utilities. Housing providers

We will work with your teams from plot to planting. Last year, we worked with social housing provider Onward Homes to plant woodlands at three sites in Tameside and Bolton, including at Union Close in Hattersley.

Together, with customers of Onward Homes, 540 whips were planted to enhance the green spaces for those who live there.

Sports Clubs

We can work closely with your organisation to identify and survey potential areas of your club that could be used for planting.

We recently joined forces with rugby league club, Salford City Roosters to plant trees, greening their club’s grounds and increasing the social value for the local community, players and staff.

Our offer for farmers

For farmers, we offer our Farmers Resilience Fund, offering farmers a fixed figure per hectare of woodland created for a period of ten years. The fund is highly flexible with no minimum or maximum size requirements.

The new woodlands are planned and designed in partnership with the farmer. This ensures that the new trees make the maximum contribution to the farm business and its future resilience.
